An unforgettable experience awaits you in Killarney National Park. The White Tailed Eagles are back, and there is no better place to see them than from the famous red boats of Gap of Dunloe Tours.
Each morning our skippers slip along the quiet lake edges where these incredible birds often perch. From the water you get a clear, steady view that you simply will not get from the road. If spotting Ireland’s top wildlife is high on your list of things to do in Killarney, this is the way to do it.
A conservation success story

After more than a century away, the white tailed eagle has returned to Irish skies. The national reintroduction programme began in 2007 and the final release of chicks in August 2025 marked a major milestone for Irish wildlife. Killarney National Park has been central to that story, with regular sightings across Lough Leane, Muckross Lake and the Upper Lake.
Why the boat is the best way to see eagles
You rarely see these birds well from the road. The lake margins, islands and shoreline trees are their favoured spots. From our open boats you travel quietly right where the action is, with uninterrupted views for binoculars and cameras. Morning sailings offer the best chance, when birds often sit low on branches or shoreline rocks before riding the thermals.
Top spotting tips
- Go early for the calmest water and most reliable sightings
- Watch the edges and treetops as we pass islands and inlets
- Listen for crows and gulls drawing attention to a soaring bird
- Bring binoculars or a long lens and keep movements gentle
What to look for

White tailed eagles are Ireland’s largest birds of prey. Look for very broad, plank like wings and a strong, direct glide. Adults have a pale head and a short wedge shaped white tail. Younger birds are darker overall. The wingspan can exceed two metres, so when one lifts off a lakeside branch it is a sight you will remember.
How your day works
Our lake journey departs from Reen Pier beside Ross Castle and crosses the three Lakes of Killarney to Lord Brandon’s Cottage. From there you can continue through the Gap of Dunloe on foot, bicycle or jaunting car, and return to Killarney by bus, or simply enjoy the lakes section as a relaxed wildlife cruise. It is a classic Ring of Kerry experience that blends scenery, history and Irish wildlife in one day.
